Abstract

633,638. Control systems for consumption apparatus. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. March 26, 1947, No. 8255. Convention date, April 25, 1946. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] Switching control.-In a switching system, a pressure-operated switch opening and closing at different pressures and suitable for use in aircraft, comprises an evacuated capsule 13 mounted in a sealed casing 11 connected at 20 to an air pipe-line. A solenoid 12 also mounted in the casing has a core 47 returned by a spring 48 so as to compress a weaker spring 55 situated between the capsule 13 and a collar 53 screwed on to the end of the core 47. As the air pressure falls, the capsule expands against the spring 55 and a contact 60 on the capsule engages an adjustable pointed contact 28 to close the solenoid circuit. The core 47 then moves to the right causing a contact 51 carried by it to disengage contacts 42 controlling a load 67 and engage contacts 40 controlling a load 68, this movement also relieving the compression of the spring 55 on the capsule 13. Separation of the contacts 28, 60 to de-energize the solenoid and return the contact 51 cannot now take place until the pressure rises above that at which the solenoid was energized, since during the expansion of the capsule to energize the solenoid the force of spring 55 had to be overcome and thus the air pressure required was less than would have been necessary had there been no spring.
