Abstract
611,950. Actuation of switches. SEGRAVE, C. R., WILLIAMS, T. B. GLYNNE-, and BARKER, H. H. May 14, 1946, No. 14506. [Class 38 (v)] A fluid-pressure actuated switch comprises a spring-pressed plunger, Fig. 1 (not shown), bearing on a diaphragm 3 and on a bridge-piece 9 carrying spring-loaded contacts 10, 12 cooperating with adjustable fixed contacts 11, 13. On an increase in pressure, the bridge 9 moves upwards and, first contacts 10, 11 close and then, if the increase is maintained, contacts 12, 13 close. The former prepare the circuit of a relay coil 21, which is energized when contacts 12, 13 close, thereby closing contacts 22 to energize a control unit 23. If the pressure now drops, contacts 12, 13 reopen, but, owing to a shunt connection 24, the coil 21 remains energized until contacts 10, 11 open. The coil is therefore de-energized at a lower pressure than that at which it is energized. The diaphragm may be exposed to the intake duct or the liquid-fuel pipe of a liquid-fuel heating system of an aircraft so as to cut out the control unit 23 if the aircraft is grounded or the pipe breaks. The diaphragm may be replaced by a piston or a coiled tube.
