A yarn winding machine having a plurality of spindles, yarn guide means for each spindle and a common traverse mechanism for actuating the guide means, is furnished with a link between the traverse mechanism and the guide means, the link being variable at will to extend the traverse of the guide beyond the normal limits thereof, for the purpose of winding a magazine wrap on the bobbins &c. mounted on the spindles. The ring rail is vertically traversed by the main oscillating shaft 37 through a " link " 36, shaft 19, arm 20, roller 24 and rod 22 ; a roller 29 on the arm 20 reciprocating the pig tail bar 5 through a rod 27. The " link 36 comprises a lever 56 keyed to the shaft 37 and a bellcrank 38 pivotally mounted on the shaft 37, the degree of mutual adjustability between the two levers being determined by screws 52, 53. The lever 38, during the down stroke of the traverse rail, is rocked with respect to the lever 54 by the admission of air to a cylinder 49 which, through a piston and link system 46, 42, 40, depresses the lever 38 to the stop 52 and so extends the lower limit of the traverse to effect the winding of the magazine wrap on the bobbin base. Following the winding of the wrap, the normal traverse is resumed. A manually-operated screw 56 and lock nut 55 are provided to limit or control the traverse stroke without the use of compressed air in the cylinder 49.
