[Class 122(i)] A piston ring or like packing ring having applied on at least one surface of the base material of the ring, which is subjected to wear when the ring is in use, a layer of a hard wear-resistant material such as chromium, different from the base material of the ring, and having applied on said layer a layer of a relatively soft material such as tin, cadmium, zinc or lead, which will wear appreciably more quickly than said first-mentioned layer.
