Abstract

632,909. Protective cut-out arrangements. VICTOR PRODUCTS (WALLSEND), Ltd., and MANN, R. W. Dec. 24, 1947, No. 34247. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] In an underground lighting and signalling system cornprising a number of lighting fittings connected together by cables with detachable couplings, and signalling switches arranged to control the lights, the switches are arranged in series in a low-voltage pilot circuit containing a relay or contactor, which interrupts the lighting circuit when the continuity of the pilot circuit is broken by operating a switch or by a fault. A further relay is provided to cause the interruption of the pilot and lighting circuits in the event of an earth fault on the lighting circuit, and the arrangement is such that the lighting circuit cannot be closed until all the couplings have been assembled. Fig. 1 shows one of a number of lighting fittings 35 with switches 42, supplied from a transformer 6 by means of a five-cored cable having cores 29, 30 energized by a centre-tapped. secondary winding 10, a core 31 connected to the core, 29 by a final coupling or shorting cap 47, a pilot line 32 and an earth continuity line or core 33, which is connected to the line 32 by the coupling 47. When the pilot circuit is complete the relay or contactor 8 is energized by a low voltage secondary winding 18 on the transformer 6, and closes its contacts 11 ... 14 to complete the circuit for the lamps 52. The opening of a switch 42 or the breakage of the pilot line 32 or earth line 33 de-energizes the relay 8 to open the lighting circuit. The centre-tapping of the winding 10 is connected to earth through the winding of a relay 9, which has its normally closed contacts 21, 22, 24 connected in series with the pilot circuit. Hence on the occurrence of an earth fault on the lines 29 ... 31, the relay 9 is energized and opens its contacts to interrupt the pilot circuit so causing contactor 8 to open the lighting circuit, the relay 9 being held open until reset manually, by a latch 54 which engages a detent 55 in the armature 25 of the relay.
