Abstract

849,213. Control of motors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 11, 1957 [March 9, 1956], No. 7442/56. Class 38 (3). In an electrically-propelled vehicle, a changeover switch 14 arranges the power circuit for operation at one or the other of two different supply voltages, and means responsive to the supply voltage automatically ensure that the switch assumes an appropriate position. A plurality of traction motors (either of the A.C. or D.C. types) are supplied from secondary windings 10a, 10b, and, when the switch 14 is in its high-voltage position, primary windings 10d- 10g are connected in series between circuitbreaker 13 and earth. However, when the switch 14 is in the low-voltage position, the four primary sections are connected in parallel between the circuit-breaker and earth. The position of the change-over switch is controlled by voltage-responsive relays RH, RL, the relay RL picking-up at a voltage lower than that necessary to actuate relay RH. Operation of the change-over switch to its appropriate position is followed by closure of the circuit-breaker 13, loss of supply voltage causing the circuitbreaker to be tripped. If the circuit-breaker is closed when the change-over switch is moving from one operative position to the other, the trip coil of the breaker will be energized. In another arrangement, a single primary winding is provided with a tapping and the change-over switch is arranged to connect part only of the winding in circuit for operation at low voltage and to connect the whole of the winding in circuit for high-voltage operation, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). Alternatively, the transformer may be provided with two separate primary windings arranged respectively for the lower and higher supply voltages. The relays RH, RL, may be replaced by relays R1, R2, R3, adapted to operate at ascending values of the line voltage. If relay R1 only is actuated, it completes a circuit for the low-voltage coil 14L of the change-over switch which, in moving to its appropriate position, energizes a holding coil 13e of the circuit-breaker 13. When all three relays are operated, the high-voltage coil 14H of the change-over switch is energized, and then the circuit-breaker is closed. If, however, only the relays R1, R2 are operated, the circuit-breaker is automatically tripped and will not close again until the line-potential is restored to a proper value and the change-over switch set to a proper position.
