Abstract
632,874. Powder metallurgy. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 27, 1947, No. 23651. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1939. [Class 83 (iv)] Porous ferrous articles substantially free from carbon are made by compacting iron powder with sufficient ferro-phosphorus powder to bring the phosphorus content of the finished article to between one quarter and two and a half per cent by weight, and sintering at a temperature above the melting point of iron-ironphosphide eutectic, preferably between 1950‹ F. and 2100‹ F. The iron powder may be mixed with alloying ingredients such as copper, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, vanadium and the ferro-phosphorus should have a phosphorus content in excess of three per cent by weight. Sintering may be carried out under decarbonizing conditions, and the phosphorus may be added in any desired form.
