Abstract
Ricinoleyl amines, in particular diricinoleyl triethylene tetramine (see Group IV (b)), are used as foam-prevention agents. An example is given of their use in a boiler-feed water.ALSO:Ricinoleyl amines are prepared by heating ricinoleic acid containing inter- and intra-esters with water and an amine at a pressure above 60 lbs. p.s.i. and a temperature above 100 DEG C. until the esters are hydrolysed, then removing the water by releasing the pressure, and heating at a temperature above 150 DEG C. but below that at which extensive dehydration takes place. Amines specified are the preferred polyalkylene polyamides such as diethylene tetramine and tetraethylene pentamine, and other amines such as octadecylamine and dodecylamine, and aromatic amines such as aniline, a -naphthylamine, and o-, m-, and p-phenylenediamine. The preferred temperature range is 150-170 DEG C. and usually two mols. of acid are reacted with one of amine. In an example, ricinoleic acid (containing only 66 per cent free acid), triethylene tetramine, and water (100 per cent excess), are heated as described above to give the diricinoleylated triethylene tetramine.
