Abstract

The invention comprises hydrazine salts of aliphatic amino-polycarboxylic acids, and their production from hydrazine or its hydrate or a salt thereof having at least one reactive amino group and the acid or a salt thereof having at least one free acid group. The preferred reactants are hydrazine or its hydrate, monohydrochloride, sulphate, phosphate or acetate on the one hand and ethylene-diamine tetraacetic acid or its mono-, di- or tri-alkali salts on the other, in proportions of 2, 1 1/2 , 1 or 1/2 mol. of hydrazine per mol. of acid. Other acids that may be used are hydroxyethyl-ethylene-diamine triacetic acid, diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid, triethylenetetramine hexaacetic acid and nitrilotriacetic acid.ALSO:Water is simultaneously deoxygenated and softened by treatment with a salt of hydrazine with an aliphatic amino-polycarboxylic acid, especially ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. The hydrazine and the acid are preferably present in equimolecular proportions although 2 : 1, 3 : 2 and 1 : 2 ratios may be used. Any reactive groups not neutralized are masked by salt-formation, e.g. the two spare carboxylic acid groups as sodium salts. Other suitable acids are mentioned.
