Ammonium salts of carboxylic acids are prepared by contacting a powdered aliphatic carboxylic acid with substantially anhydrous gaseous ammonia for a time and at a temperature sufficient to bring about the formation of the desired ammonium salt. When the acid is a dicarboxylic acid the product may be the mono- and/or di-ammonium salt depending upon the quantity of ammonia employed.
