Abstract

The invention comprises the chemotherapeutic compound, 2,7-diamino-9-phenyl-10-ethyl-phenanthridinium chloride. It may be prepared by treating a compound <FORM:0735438/IV (b)/1> wherein X is a group convertible to a primary amino group, e.g., a nitro, acylamino or carbalkoxyamino group, with an ethyl ester of a strong acid to produce the 10-ethyl quaternary salt and the radicals X are then converted into amino groups and the anion, if not a chloride, is converted into a chloride. The compound may also be prepared from other 2,7-diamino-9-phenyl - 10 - ethyl - phenanthridinium salts by metathesis or from the quaternary hydroxide or pseudo-base by treatment with HCl or with a chloride of a volatile base.
