Abstract
Polyamides are prepared by the heat treatment of dicarboxylic acids with ethylene bis-(3-aminopropyl) ether. Suitable acids are phthalic, succinic, maleic, b : b 1-dicarboxydiethyl ether, acids with the formula RN (C2H4COOH)2, where R is hydrogen or a lower alkyl group, e.g. methyl or ethyl; S(C2H4 COOH)2 or HOOCC2H4NR(CH2)xNRC2H4 COOH, where R is hydrogen or a low alkyl group such as methyl or ethyl and x is a small whole number, e.g. 2 or 3. This last acid may be made by addition of acrylonitrile to a primary or secondary diamine. In examples: (1) ethylene-bis-(3-aminopropyl) ether and sebacic acid were heated for about 6 hours to 200-220 DEG C., preferably in presence of nitrogen in a closed vessel. Water formed is allowed to escape. A brittle resin is obtained. It may be plasticized and used for making a hydrocarbon-insoluble film; (2) adipic acid is used in place of sebacic acid. Ethylene bis-(3-aminopropyl) ether is prepared by reacting acrylonitrile with ethylene glycol in presence of sodium hydroxide and reducing the resulting ethylene bis-(2-cyanoethyl) ether with hydrogen under pressure in presence of a finely-divided nickel catalyst. Specifications 487,734, 565,350 and 23690/39 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91) are referred to.
