Abstract
Polyamides are produced by reacting polybasic acids, such as adipic acid or terephthalic acid, with an aralkyl diamine having the general formula <FORM:0939107/IV(a)/1> in which R is a hydrogen atom or methyl group, Ar is a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon group, and each of R1 and R2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aryl group. For the production of the diamines-(see Group IV(b)).ALSO:Aralkyl diamines having the general formula <FORM:0939107/IV(a)/1> (in which R is a hydrogen atom or methyl group, Ar is a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon group, and each of R1 and R2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aryl group) are made by heating a halogen-containing compound of the general formula <FORM:0939107/IV(a)/2> (in which X and X1 are halogen atoms) with ammonia or an amine in the liquid phase, if necessary under pressure. In Example 1, a mixture of liquid ammonia and para-(alpha-chlorethyl)benzyl chloride is heated at 40 DEG C. in an autoclave for 8 hours. The cooled product is extracted with ether, the extract is dried over potassium carbonate, and the ether is then distilled-off. The para-(alpha-amino-ethyl)benzylamine, so obtained, is distilled under reduced pressure. In Example 2, methylamine is used in place of the ammonia of Example 1; and the product is para-(alpha-methylaminoethy) - N - methylbenzylamine. In Example 4, the same halogen compound is reacted with aniline to give para-(alpha-phenyl-aminoethyl) -N-phenylbenzylamine. Example 3 describes the preparation of 1-(alpha-amino-ethyl) -4-(aminomethyl)-naphthalene. These diamines may be reacted with polybasic acids to produce polyamides (Group IV(a)).
