Abstract

A process for the manufacture of rubber-like substances comprises reacting a di-alkylol tertiary amine of the general formula HO-(CH2)n-NR-(CH2)n-OH, where R is an aromatic substituent, with a di-carboxylic acid of the series HOOC-(CH2)m -COOH, when n and m are greater than unity, and heating until a rubber-like polymer is obtained. A specified amine is N-phenyl diethanolamine, and specified acids are succinic, adipic and sebacic acids. Approximately equimolecular proportions of the reactants are generally used, the mixture being first heated at 140-180 DEG C. to effect esterification, and later at 200-250 DEG C. until the rubber-like polymer is obtained. A non-volatile acid condensation catalyst, e.g. d-camphor 10-sulphonic acid, p-toluene sulphonic acid or boric acid, may be present. Examples are given. According to the Provisional Specification, R, in the general formula above, could be an aliphatic or an aromatic substituent.
