Abstract

631,483. Absorbent paper. JACKSON, Ltd., H., and WEXLER, A. April 23, 1947, No. 10825. [Class 96] The wet strength and wettability of absorbent or filter paper is increased by adding to or precipitating in paper pulp in the beater 1.6 to 3.5 per cent of a gel-forming hydroxide of a metal, e.g. aluminium, iron; chromium, zinc, manganese, tin, titanium or magnesium. In some cases a further increase in wet strength results from drying the paper at high temperature, e.g. at 130‹ to 140‹ C. using hot air or radiant heat. Other wet-strength media may also be incorporated. In examples, aluminium hydroxide is precipitated by adding sodium aluminate and aluminium sulphate. According to the Provisional Specification a plasticised polyvinyl acetate emulsion may also be added.
