Abstract
Mica paper is formed from a slurry of mica particles, generally of 0.1-1 microns in thickness, in aqueous potassium silicate solution. The slurry obtained is formed into a paperlike sheet and thereafter dried, preferably at a temperature not exceeding 150 DEG C. The K2O:SiO2 ratio is preferably from 1 to 1.5 to 1 to 4 and the silicate solution employed generally contains from 40 to 80% by weight of water. The initial mica slurry may contain 0.5 to 5% by weight of mica and the silicate solution may be employed in amounts from 10 to 50 parts by weight per part of mica in the slurry. The mica may first be heated at 700-900 DEG C. before grinding to size, preferably in an aqueous medium, which may be the silicate solution employed. Residual water may be removed from the sheet by calendering at 110-175 DEG C. or the mica sheet from the paper making screen may be dried at elevated temperature and then pressed at 200-1000 p.s.i. In a typical example the tensile strength was increased to 7,200 p.s.i.
