Abstract

Alkali metal, particularly Na, silicate powder, which has a SiO2/N2O ratio of 2-2.9 and a water content of at least 8%, is heated at 250-300 DEG C. for 5-10 minutes or at 1000 DEG C. or above for a very short time, e.g. by passage through a flame, to give an expanded powder of density 10-100 kg./m.3 The silicate may be obtained by precipitation or by spray drying an aqueous solution, and may be preheated to 130 DEG C. and powdered by crushing. Materials such as Al, Si, Zn, or kaolin may be incorporated into the starting material.
