Abstract

In recovering fibres and synthetic resin from broke comprising waste paper and/or paperboard faced or laminated with a film or films of synthetic resin, the wetted broke, containing, at most, 70% by weight of water, is subjected to vigorous mechanical shredding in apparatus such as a disc refiner and reduced to individual fibres and relatively large pieces of synthetic resin, which are then segregated from the fibres. The broke may be wetted by steeping it in water containing, if desired, a wetting agent, or by steam, as by introducing water or steam into the inlet of the shredding apparatus.
