Abstract
A process for improving the drainage properties of a suspension of fibres obtained from a raw material containing a proportion of bark and suitable for use in the production of fibreboard &c. comprises subjecting the suspension of liberated fibres to a heat treatment at 60 DEG -300 DEG C such that the solid content at the end of the treatment is 30 - 80% and for a sufficient length of time so that after dilution with water to a consistency suitable for sheet formation the drainage properties of the suspension are better by at least 5 Defibrator seconds-as defined in the specification-than those of a similar suspension which has not been given the heat treatment. The fibrous material may include the bark of spruce, pine, fir, birch, or aspen and also chips of these woods, waste material from pulp manufacture or from saw mills, and asbestos. The treatment, which may be in one or more steps, is by hot air or steam at atmospheric or elevated pressures, and may be carried out before and/or after the fibrous material is refined. In the particular example described the raw material is defibrated in the presence of steam, and blown in a steam suspension into a cyclone into which water at 60 DEG C was also introduced. The fibrous material passes from the bottom of the cyclone on to a conveyor belt in a heat insulated casing for the heat treatment, and from thence into a stock bin for dilution.
