Abstract
Vegetable material to be pulped is impregnated with a solution of sulphite so that the ratio of water to dry vegetable matter does not exceed 3:1 and the quantity of combined base in equivalents does not exceed the quantity of combined acids in the vegetable material. The impregnated material is then heated in saturated steam at a temperature of 160 to 180 DEG C for a time shorter than 10 minutes and defibred. There is produced in high yield a pulp of high bulk, opacity and brightness, suitable for newsprint, magazines and other paper and for cartons, wallboard and fibreboard. The sulphite may be ammonium, sodium or magnesium sulphite, and may be introduced at two or more points of the reaction apparatus; part of it may be introduced immediately before the defibration. The vegetable material may be chips of wood, e.g. spruce, poplar, aspen, hornbeam or birch.
