Abstract

631,467. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium and its alloys. COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES ALAIS, FROGES, & CAMARGUE. Dec. 11, 1946, No. 36595. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1945. Drawings to Specifications. [Class 41] Electrolytic oxidation of aluminium and its alloys and in particular refined aluminium is effected by an alternating current on which is superposed a direct current component in relation to which the articles to be oxidised are connected as anodes, the intensity of the direct current component having a value lower than the amplitude of the alternating current. The colours of the oxide layer are varied by varying the intensity of the direct current component, which is given a value of the order of one quarter of the total current strength. The electrolyte used may be oxalic acid. In one arrangement the positive pole of a direct current source is connected to the centre tap of the secondary winding of an A.C. transformer and the negative pole to an intermediate electrode in the electrolysis bath between the two aluminium anodes connected one to each end of the secondary winding. Alternatively two cells having a common anode connection may be employed with the negative pole of the direct current source connected to the centre of the transformer secondary winding, the cathodes of the two cells being connected one to each end of this latter.
