Abstract

616,450. Fused electrolyte apparatus. COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES ALAIS, FROGES, & CAMARGUE. Sept. 3, 1946, No. 26468. Convention date, Sept. 26, 1945. [Class 41] In a cell for refining aluminium by the threelayer process, current is led to the uppermost layer which consists of the refined metal by means of lateral leads which are constituted solely by refined aluminium. As shown, one or more blocks of refined aluminium 10 are each contained in a pot arranged externally of the cell upon one side thereof and extend to the interior of the cell by way of a channel 11 traversing the lateral wall of the cell and establish connection with the cathode layer 7 of refined aluminium. The block 10 is also connected to one or more bars 12 connected to the negative pole of the source of electrical power feeding the cell. The cell is started into operation by a cathode assembly inserted through the top of the cell and connected to the bar 12 thereby short-circuiting the cathode lead 10, 11. When the cell has the desired layer of refined aluminium on the electrolyte 6, the cathode assembly is removed and the bath covered by a heat-insulating dome 8. Specifications 405,596 and 503,578 are referred to.
