Abstract
630,959. Stuffing-box substitutes. BYRON JACKSON CO. Feb. 12, 1946, No. 4321. Convention date, Feb. 13, 1945. [Class 122 (v)] A motor-driven pump comprises a housing 18 filled with dielectric liquid in which the motor is immersed and the shaft 7 extends through a liquid seal 11 and drives an impeller 8. The shaft is sealed at the walls of the liquid seal 11 by rubbing collar devices 23, 24 as described in Specification 631,022, and the bellows 25 equalizes the pressure between the motor housing and the liquid seal as described in Specification 630,958. The delivery pressure of the pump acts through pipe 28 which is connected to the chamber 27 surrounding a chamber 26 and connected thereto by ports 32. The lower part of both chambers contains an inert liquid and this transmits the pump delivery pressure to the dielectric liquid contained in the upper part of the chamber 26 which is in communication with the motor housing. The chambers 26, 27 may be arranged as separate cylinders connected at their lower ends. Instead of using an inert fluid, the dielectric liquid and the pumped fluid may be separated by diaphragms.
