Abstract

560,506. Stuffing - box substitutes. BYRON JACKSON CO. Jan. 1, 1943, No. 39, Convention date, Dec. 15, 1941. [Class 122 (v)] In a submersible structure, e.g. an electric motor-driven pump, comprising a casing 1 filled with liquid and a driving shaft 15 extending through a seal, e.g. a liquid seal 18, a chamber 2 between the seal and external liquid is supplied with a third liquid maintained at a pressure greater than that of the external liquid by means, e.g. a spring-loaded valve 49, associated with an outlet from the chamber, whereby contamination of the sealing liquid by the external liquid is avoided. Pressure on opposite sides of the seal may be equalised by a connection 25 between the chamber 2 and casing 1. Liquid is supplied to the chamber 2 from a tank 37. Should the liquid level in the tank fall below a prescribed limit a ball float 51 operates a switch 62 to actuate a relay 56 and de-energize the motor.
