Abstract
652,658. Stuffing - box substitutes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 24, 1948, No. 13973. Convention date, June 2, 1947. [Class 122(v)] In a machine cooled by gas, preferably hydrogen, and having a gland seal 7 where the rotor shaft 6 extends through the gas filled housing 4; the gland is oil sealed by a system comprising an oil reservoir 8 and an oil trap 9 within the housing at levels respectively above and below that of the gland seal 7, an oil sump 11 outside the housing, means controlled by the oil level 15 in the reservoir 8 for pumping oil from the sump 11 to the reservoir, a pipe 16 for delivering oil from the reservoir to the gland seal, pipes 17, 23 for delivering oil from the gas side and the air side of the gland seal to the trap 9 and sump 11 respectively, and valve 21 and pipe means 18 controlled by the oil level 22 in the trap 9 for delivering oil from the trap to the sump. A pump P driven by a motor M controlled by a float valve switch 13 delivers oil from the sump 11 to the reservoir 8. The gland seal may be provided with passageways for the circulation therethrough of a cooling liquid other than the gland oil.
