Abstract

Knitted fabrics of the kind described in U.S.A. Specification 2,205,581 are treated with a cellulosic composition so that a cellulosic film bridges the space between the elongated loops, holding the two sides together, restricts movement of warp threads within the loops under ordinary conditions of use and laundering, and sets the shape of the meshes, which are hexgonal, without closing the meshes in the fabric. Suitable compositions to be applied to the fabric are solutions of cellulose in alkaline sodium zincate solution, cellulose ethers in aqueous alkali, or cellulose xanthate solutions. The cellulosic material is precipitated in the usual way, e.g. with dilute acid, and the fabric is washed and dried. Tentering is necessary and may be effected at any stage and at more than one stage. The treatment may be repeated. Fabrics made of viscose rayon, acetate rayon, cotton, nylon, silk and wool are specified. Specifications 573,767 and 573,768 are referred to.
