Abstract
630,428. Hot-gas engines. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. May 9, 1946, No. 14023. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1941. Drawings to Specification. [Class 7 (i)] In a hot gas engine in which a heat conveying medium is provided between the source of heat for the engine and the heater, which heat conveying medium receives through a wall heat from the source and entirely or partly passes from the liquid phase into the vapour phase and delivers heat through a wall of the heater to the working medium in the engine while entirely or partly passing from the vapour phase to the liquid phase, the temperature in the hot space during operation of the engine exceeds 400‹ C. and metals, metal alloys, salts for instance metal salts or mixtures thereof which do not decompose at the highest temperature to which the heat conveying medium is required to be heated are used for the heat conveying medium. A burner heats the heat conveying medium in a chamber where it entirely or partly passes from the liquid phase into the vapour phase. It then circulates to a heating jacket around the engine heater in which it gives up heat to the working medium in the engine while passing entirely or partly into the liquid phase. The medium then circulates back to the chamber to be reheated by the burner. The following' metals are suitable for the heat conveying medium : Sodium, potassium, cadmium calcium, mercury, zinc and lead or the following salts may be used : Metal halides for instance zinc chloride, aluminium bromide or mixtures thereof. Also metal nitrates, nitrites or mixtures thereof. It is advantageous if the heating medium is arranged to flow within the heating jacket in a number of parallel channels each having a small cross-sectional area. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that cadmium iodide, calcium iodide or zinc bromide may be used as the heat conveying medium. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
