Abstract

1454298 Hot gas engines PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N V 20 Dec 1973 [2 Jan 1973] 59036/73 Heading F1S In a hot gas engine, at least the part of the cylinder which surrounds the expansion space 10 and at least the part of the regenerator housing 22 which surrounds the end of the regenerator 8 which is at a higher temperature during operation are each lined internally with a layer 17, 23 of heat insulating material which acts as a shield between the cylinder part and the expansion space and between the regenerator housing part and the end of the regenerator respectively, means being provided on the outer sides of the parts of the cylinder and the regenerator housing for cooling these parts. Each heat insulating layer may be made of a ceramic material. As shown the cooling means comprises two cooling jackets one 18 associated with the cylinder and the other 24 surrounding the regenerator. Heat extracted by liquid in the cooling jacket 18 may be used for heating the passenger compartment of a vehicle propelled by the engine. In a modification (not shown) the cooling means comprises a heat pipe which surrounds the posts of the cylinder and the regenerator housing. The heat pipe may contain water as the heat-transfer medium. The heater pipes are situated inside a further heat pipe which is surrounded by a heat insulating jacket. The application of the invention to a four cylinder double acting hot gas engine is described.
