Abstract

1386486 Heat pipes PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 18 Oct 1972 [21 Oct 1971] 47925/72 Heading F4U [Also in Division F1] A heating system for the supply of thermal energy to the heater 2 of a stirling-cycle hot gas engine 1, comprises a series of containers 4, linked either in series or in parallel, and containing heat accumulating material, e.g. lithium fluoride; said containers being spaced apart by compressed steel wool 17 in a closed space 3. A working fluid, e.g. sodium is present in the space 3. The walls of the space 3, including the part adjacent the heater 2, and the sides of the containers 4 are lined with a porous mass 6 having a capillary structure such that in operation, sodium evaporated by heat from the containers 4, and condensed adjacent the heater, flows back toward the containers 4 in the capillary structure. The containers 4 are heated by an electric heating element 18. The steel wool 17, acts not only to space the containers 4, but also to prevent the space 3 from collapsing under pressure at high temperatures. As shown, the pressure in the containers 4 is controlled by valves 8 and 10. The steel wool also maintains the capillary structure 6 in position, thus allowing sodium condensate to flow through the capillary structure without difficulty. Since the steel wool has pores of comparatively large dimensions, sodium vapour can flow through it substantially unhindered.
