Abstract

1329567 Stirling cycle engines UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 21 Oct 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 50073/70 Heading F1S [Also in Division F4] A stirling cycle engine comprises hot and cold chambers 15, 16 intercommunicating through a regenerator 22 and a liquid system in which liquid 13 within at least one of the chambers is displaceable for varying the gas volume in the chamber by direct contact with the gas. As shown the whole engine is mounted so as to be pivotable in the plane of the paper about a point marked A and a spring 23 biases the engine towards a rest position. In operation the output column of liquid 14 oscillates. Water may be used for the displacer liquid 13 and mercury in the output column 14. Output power may be taken from the rocking movement of the engine. Liquid movement or pressure variations may be employed to drive a moving iron or moving coil generator. In general the engine must be turned to resonate for satisfactory operation. Other embodiments are described. Sources of heat which have been used include hot air blowers, infra red lamps and electrical heating elements but other heat sources may be employed.
