[Class 37] [Also in Group XL (b)] A coreless moving coil indicating system is energized by the selenium cell of a luxmeter, a -non-linear (e.g. logarithmic) relation being necessary between the angular coil displacenebt and the quantity of light being measured so that equal percentage differences in illumination are indicated with equal accuracy at each end of the scale, and the decreased cellsensitivity at high illuminations is compensated. In Fig. 1, moving coil 2 is pivoted between pole shoes of a permanent magnet (not shown) which have a thickness b not greater than # of the pole spacing a and preferably <SP>1</SP>/ 10 thereof. Auxiliary pole-pieces 5 are magnetically connected to the pole shoes 2 and are curved to face each other so that the ends 6 lie adjacent to the moving coil. The principal and auxiliary pole shoes are proportioned and positioned to give the required non-linear field distribution for the cell used in the luxmeter and may be energized by different magnets, made of materials of differing reluctance, or the auxiliary polepieces may be narrower than the principal polepieces.
