Abstract
Di(chlorethyl)benzene is prepared by contacting diethyl benzene with chlorine in the absence of sunlight and in the presence of light from a 250-500 watt lamp, and at 0-60, preferably 20-40 DEG C. Chlorine substitution catalysts such as PCl5 or PCl3 may be present. In examples, commercial diethyl benzene containing phosphorus pentachloride is treated with chlorine at either 0 DEG or 50 DEG C. while subjected to the light of a 300 watt lamp. After flushing with inert gas, and adding hexadecylamine, fractionating at 16 mm. gives di(chlorethyl)benzene, which may be converted to divinyl benzene.
