Abstract

627,185. Refrigerating ; tubular heat exchangers. HALL, Ltd., J. & E., and FARMER, J. D. Aug. 1, 1947, No. 20928. [Classes 29 and 64(iii)] In apparatus for cooling a fluid e.g. brine comprising a cylinder 6 containing tubes 1 held in end plates 2 and through which the fluid is passed from a pipe 4 to a pipe 5, the cylinder 6 having horizontal partitions 7 through apertures 8 in which the tubes 1 pass the apertures 8 are made by punching holes in the partitions 7 so as to leave a liquid retaining rim 9. A pump 13 is provided for circulating liquid refrigerant from below the lowest partition to above the highest, the refrigerant descending through the apertures 8. Larger apertures 10 are made at the centre of each partition for the withdrawal of gaseous refrigerant. Liquid refrigerant is fed in by a pipe 12 and withdrawn by a pipe 15. The tubes 1 may be arranged in passes.
