Abstract

Each effect of a multiple - effect evaporator comprises (Fig 1) a tube bundle 14 mounted between tube sheets 22, 24 in a casing 11 which also contains a liquor/vapour separator 12 disposed above the upper tube sheet and communicating with the interior of the tubes, and also comprises an annular chamber 16, defined by casing 11, partition 36 and ring 38, which is in open communication at the top with the exterior of the tubes, and is used to remove entrained liquid from the live steam, or vapour from an adjacent effect, introduced tangentially through pipe 42. The feed effect 104 of the <PICT:0658176/III/1> <PICT:0658176/III/2> backward - flow triple - effect evaporator shown in Fig. 2 has two additional annular chambers 18 and 20 (Fig. 1). Superheated feed liquor is supplied to chamber 18 through connection 49. Part of the feed flashes into steam and is withdrawn through connection 50 and passed to chamber 12 through pipe 134 which may contain a check valve. The desuperheated liquor is withdrawn through connection 48 and supplied to the interior of the tubes via connection 52. As the liquor rises in the tubes part of it evaporates, and a mixture of liquid and vapour emerges from the tubes and strikes baffle 54 in chamber 12. The separated liquid is removed through pipe 110 and pumped to the tube bundle of the next effect 102. The superheat in the condensate of effect 102 is utilized in effect 104 by passing it through pipe 140 and connection 62 to chamber 20, where it flashes. The flashed vapour passes over partition 60 into contact with tube bundle 14, and the de-super-heated liquid flows through hole 64 into section 26, where it mixes with the condensate from the tube bundle, and then passes out of the apparatus through connection 66. Steam is supplied to the first effect 100 through pipe 136, and concentrated liquor is withdrawn from effects 100 and 102 through pipes 122 and 121 respectively. Specification 658,239 is referred to.
