Abstract
<PICT:0851130/III/1> <PICT:0851130/III/2> A flash evaporator for sea water comprises (Fig. 3) cylindrical inner and outer shells 16 and 10 having an inlet 26 and outlet 28 respectively (Fig. 2), the inlet 26 being tangential to shell 16 so that sea water, when introduced into the shell at a sufficiently high rate, forms a body of liquid whose surface is paraboloidal in shape, and spills over into the outer shell to be discharged at 28. The inlet is thus submerged by the body of liquid and the static head of liquid at the lowest point on its surface is sufficient to prevent premature flashing at the inlet. Vapour from the sea water passes through a mist separating pack 32 of conico-annular form into a condenser housing 20, the housing containing a plurality of condenser tubes 36 through which cold water is passed via inlet 44 and outlet 46. Condensation of vapour creates the partial vacuum for further evaporation of sea water, and the condensate is discharged at 54. Air and other non-condensibles are discharged at 56. A plurality of evaporators forming a multi-stage plant may be arranged by connecting inlets 44, 58 and 26 with outlets 46, 54 and 28 of an adjacent evaporator.
