Abstract

An evaporator particularly adapted for the evaporation of sea water and like liquids containing impurities which form scale on the heating tubes comprises a shell 10 divided into two compartments by a partition 9 provided with apertures 19 of restricted cross section. The water is heated under pressure in the lower section by means of steam pipes 14 and flowing through the apertures 19 is flashed into vapour in the upper section which is maintained under vacuum by means attached to the vapour outlet 21. Unevaporated <PICT:0722775/III/1> water collects in a sump 22 and is recycled through line 24 by a pump 25 which maintains the pressure in the lower compartment. Impurities are prevented from accumulating by continuously withdrawing a part of the recycled stream through line 28, and passing it through heat exchanger 30 where it preheats the feed supplied through line 29.
