[Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group XIII] An electric water heater of the displacement or overflow type comprises an inner tank 10 having a large opening in the bottom, a heat insulating enclosure 11 having a well registering with the opening, a closure member 21 received in the well and making sealing engagement with the tank to close the opening, an electrical heating element 22 and thermostat 23 carried by the member 21, and water inlet and outlet pipes 13, 18 near the top of the tank. Cold water is poured into a receptacle 15 and, when a plug 16 is removed, delivered by the pipe 13 to the bottom of the tank, thereby displacing an equal volume of hot water through the delivery pipe 18. The outlet 18 is provided with downwardly extending parts 17a, 18a, so that the water is drawn down to level 20, but flow does not start again until the water reaches the level of the horizontal part of pipe 18, thereby preventing "dribbling" due to expansion of newly supplied cold water. The inner tank 10 is heat insulated by means of glass wool, cork blocks or other insulating material 12, also by tubes or rings 14, 19 and 27 of plastic or like material, and a felt or like disc 28. The tank 10 is formed of two drawn metal end portions joined by a central annular seam 10c, and all changes in direction of its inner surface are by curves of substantial radius. The tank 10 and shell 11 are pivotally mounted on a three legged stand so that they may be tilted about two of the legs and the closure member 21 removed for cleaning. To allow for irregularities in the floor the legs are provided with rubber cup-like members 34 holding a selected number of spacing discs 33a.
