[Class 64(i)] In a water or other heater comprising a heating member, e.g. a flue tube 2 with an associated burner 3, surrounded by a liquid storage vessel 1 from the top of which hot liquid is withdrawn at 6 a partitioned-off auxiliary compartment 7 immediately surrounds at least a part of the heating member within the storage vessel, the arrangement being such that fresh cold liquid is introduced into the bottom of the auxiliary compartment, e.g. from the supply pipe 8, whilst heated liquid flows from the top of the auxiliary compartment to the bottom of the main compartment, e.g. through the pipe 9. The compartment 7 surrounds the major part of the heating member but not its upper portion. A thermostat 11 controlling the burner is located on or near the bottom of the main compartment and a by-pass (not shown) may be arranged from the supply pipe 8 to discharge a small quantity of cold water in the vicinity of the thermostat. The heat source may be an electric heating element.
