[Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] [Also in Groups XIX and XXXVIII] Apparatus for detecting the breakage of a sliver in a roving frame comprises a steel piano wire a rigidly secured at each end to a metal inertia mass b resiliently suspended from a member d by a frame f carrying rubber cords g. A piezo-electric crystal h of the bender type is attached to the wire a within the frame f, which is felt lined. The crystal is connected to a valve amplifier through terminals l<SP>1</SP>, m<SP>1</SP> in a strip j carried by lugs i<SP>1</SP> ona thin brass plate i cemented to the crystal. The crystal and amplifier are designed to respond to vibrations of high frequency such as would be caused by the frictional contact of a broken sliver with the wire a and to be unaffected by vibrations of low frequency such as unwanted mechanical and sound vibrations. The controL voltage yielded by the valve amplifier may be used to operate an indicator or a relay for stopping the frame. In place of a crystal, the detector may comprise a. magnetic core and electric winding thereon, sus- . pended by a central mounting from a thin plate p, Fig. 5, of magnetic material with ends bent at right angles near the ends of the core to form short air gaps in a magnetic circuit. The vibrations to be detected will flex the plate to vary the length and hence the reluctance of the air gaps.
