[Class 46] [Also in Group XXVIII] In cylinder-type base-exchange apparatus the branch pipes 17, Fig. 2, 18b, Fig. 3, of the external pipe-work, which are respectively connected with the water inlet and outlet openings of the cylinder, are formed or provided with ring-like parts 17a, 18a, positioned so that connecting sleeves 20 may be passed therethrough to permit ready attachment to and detachment from the cylinder of the external pipe-work assembly without dismantling the pipe-work. Each sleeve 20 screws into a bush 12 or 13 against a washer, in front of which the ring 17a or 18a bears, the sleeve 20 having a corresponding flange 20d abutting against a further washer 21 on the outside of the ring. Apertures 20c are provided in that part of the sleeve 20 within the ring 17a. An edge filter unit 14 is mounted on an extension member 22 screwing into the interior of the sleeve 20, the sleeve 20 having a bore of such size that the filter 14 and extension 22 may be withdrawn independently of it. The extension 22 also has apertures 22c providing communication with the interior of the filter unit 14. The outlet bush 13, Fig. 3. is provided with an extension having a flange 13a, against which is screwed the flange 23a of a filter housing member 23, to permit the filter unit 15 to be withdrawn through the bush 13 without removing the baseexchange material. Perforations in the housing 23 fine enough to prevent access of the material are provided. A drain-cock 18d closed by a plug 18f is also fitted to the ring member 18a.
