Abstract
626,845. Lubricating. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S., and ECKFORD, F. G. June 29, 1944, No. 12430. [Class 12 (iii)] The crank chamber 24 of a tyre-inflating or other air or gas compressor is provided at or near its bottom with a drainage hole 39 leading to a passage 38 fitted with a non- return valve 31 past which lubricating oil collecting in the chamber is blown out from the crank chamber by the pressure pulses produced by the compressor piston. Oil can pass from an annular oil reservoir 22 surrounding the crank-shaft bearing to the big-end bearing, and so on to the side walls of the crank chamber, through a passage 43, groove 42 in the crank-shaft bearing and a passage 40 containing a flow-regulating felt wick and formed by ducts in the crank-shaft, crank-web, and crank-pin ; the oil is fed by the centrifugal action in the crank web. The pump may be attached to a vehicle gear-box from which the crank-shaft is driven through an axially movable pinion 15. An oil sealing synthetic rubber ring 27 of conical section prevents oil from flowing along the crank-shaft into the crank-chamber.
