Abstract
626,413. Harvesting root-crops. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. OF GREAT BRITAIN, Ltd. (International Harvester Co.). June 25, 1947, No. 16767. [Class 6(iii)] A beet-topping unit carried beneath a tractor comprises a power-driven discknife 32, mounted floatingly on parallel links, and preceded by an adjustable gauge device 15 attached to the links so as to control the rise and fall of the disc, the unit being liftable by the action of a hydraulic cylinder 81. The disc is carried on a housing 29 projecting from a gear-box 30 and is driven from the power take-off 45 through chains 43, 39, 35. The gear-box is pivoted to a bracket which includes a U- shaped arm 22 pivoted in a sleeve secured to a plate on the tractor. The arm 22 is connected by a telescopic link 75 to a digging unit 16 including a share 83. Both the digging unit and the topping unit are lifted by a hydraulic cylinder 81 secured to the rear axle housing 14 but, because of the telescopic link 75, the topping unit is permitted a limited floating movement. The gauge device 15 comprises a fork-like member 54 connected by a pivoted link 49 to the gear-box 30, and connected by an adjustable link 57 to an arm 58. A link 47, parallel to the arm 22, connects the link 49 with a bracket fixed to the tractor. The arm 58 forms one arm of a bell-crank, of which the other arm 59 is mounted on a rod 69 rotatable by a handle 72 to adjust the member 54 relatively to the disc 32.
