Abstract

626,196. Tapping nuts. ACCURATUS, Ltd., and BOULTON, T. J. H. Aug. 18, 1947, No. 22847. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXX] Nuts d and other work-pieces are internally screw-threaded by means of a rotary tap a having a shank c extending from its smaller end, the work-pieces being fed along the shank and discharged at the opposite end of the tap. The shank c has a curved form to fit the correspondingly-shaped bore of a driving pulley e which is of two-part form. The nuts d are intermittently fed from a hopper k by a camoperated, vertically-reciprocated, feeder m to a shoot and slide downwardly thereon to a position from which they are successively pushed on to the shank c by a spring-loaded plunger p controlled by a cam r. A gripper for preventing the nuts from rotating during the tapping operation has fingers g interconnected by a spring 2. The fingers are pivotally connected to a crosshead x mounted on a slidable spindle y having a sleeve 3 slidable thereon within limits provided by a pin and slot connection 20, 21. In operation, a camcylinder 7 is rotated so that a lobe 8 thereon contacts a pin 9 to move both the spindle y and sleeve 3 in order to bring the ends of the gripper adjacent the leading nut d ; at the same time, an abutment 10 on the crosshead x contacts a pivoted spring-loaded stop v so as to arrest the line of nuts d. Further rotation of the cylinder 7 causes a lobe 12 thereon to contact a pin 13 and move the sleeve into engagement with adjustable stops 4 on the gripper, whereby the fingers g grip the end nut d. A further lobe 14 on the cylinder then contacts the pin 9 so as to withdraw the gripper and nut d past the stop v and along the tap while the thread is being cut on the nut. At the end of this operation, a lobe 15 engages the pin 13 to retract the sleeve 3 and cause the gripper to release the nut d. In a modification, the gripper is axially stationary and the pulley e is mounted on a slidable carriage which is reciprocable to and from the gripper by the cam-shaft 5.
