Abstract
707,551. Machine tool details. WRIGHT, S. B. Dec. 3, 1951 [Dec. 30, 1950], No. 31679/50. Class 83 (3) A method of breaking up swarf in a machine tool which produces it in helical lengths comprises feeding the swarf laterally into a convergent space where it is gripped remotely from its point of generation so that its axial rotation builds up sufficient torsional stress to fracture it. As applied to a turning lathe, a swarf spiral 23 from a workpiece 14 passes into a V-notch provided in a plate 19 bolted at 20 to a cross-slide 11. One side 21 of the notch is smooth and the other side 22 which engages the swarf is serrated. The swarf feeds up to the apex of the notch where it jams and is broken off usually at the tool-edge. The serrated jaw may be oscillated by the operator, or, automatically through solenoid means when the free end of the swarf moves a switch member. The device may be fitted with a guide to direct the swarf and an ejector may push out swarf pieces from the device. In a modification the serrated jaw may be in the form of a conical roller.
