Abstract
567,945. Lathes; facing - cutters. ETCHELLS & SON, Ltd., D., and ETCHELLS, H. F. July 24, 1943, No. 12077. [Class 83 (iii)] In a machine for pointing the ends of studs &c., blanks are supplied to a shoot 23, Fig. 1, from which the lowest blank is transferred by a swinging plate 15 to a station A where it is pointed by rotating tools and is then moved by the plate to a position B from which it is discharged. The tools 12, radially adjustable by screws 12b and clamped by screws 12a, Fig. 5, are carried by a head 11, Fig. 2, attached to a hollow shaft 10 driven from an electric motor by a belt pulley 25 and are moved axially periodically to engage the work 24 by a camsleeve 32 rotated at a slower speed than the shaft 10 by gearing 27, 31 connected to the shaft, the cams 37, 38 on the sleeve engaging a roller 39 mounted on a spindle 41 attached to the machine casing 42. The work plate 15 is attached to a shaft 16 carried by bearings 17, 18 and having secured thereto an arm 36 carrying a roller 35 engaging a cam 34 on the sleeve 32 to oscillate the plate, against the torsion of a spring 19, from the work-receiving to the work-holding and discharge positions. The blank is received in a notch 22, Fig. 1, of a removable block 21 attached to the plate and is transferred past a spring-pressed plate 43 and an end guide 44 to the station A where it is gripped in the notch by a rounded member 45 on a toggle lever 46 pressed to engaging position in contact with a stop 59 by a spring 58. The member 45 is adjusted on the lever 46 by a wedge 47 and is clamped by a nut 48. During the machining operation the plate 15 is maintained stationary by a plunger 49 engaging an aperture 50 therein when moved axially by a lever 51 actuated by a cam 54 on the gear 31 acting against a spring and the feeding position of the plate is determined by an adjustable stop 20. On leaving the notch 22, after machining, the work falls on a channel 60 which is pivoted at 62 and is oscillated by a link 66, shaft 68, arm 69 and cam groove 70 in the gear 31 to deliver the work to an outlet 61. An arm 72 is mounted on an extension 71 of the shaft 16 and has a notch 73 for engaging and steadying the rear end of the work, and guide 44 and carriage 75 for the shoot 23 are adjustable axially to suit the length of the work. A spring. 76 allows the shoot carriage to yield if a blank becomes jammed against the plate 15. Lubricating cutting-tools.-A tube 13a within the hollow tool-shaft 10 supplies slurry to the cutting tools 12. Stop-motions.-The lever 79, Fig. 1, of a switch box 77 rests on the blanks 24 in the shoot 23 so that when the shoot is nearly empty the lever will fall to release a switch finger 78 and stop the driving motor for the machine.
