Abstract

1320257 Reciprocating grippers G T LYON 15 Sept 1971 43012/71 Heading B3T In a machine tool such as a screw machine in which bar stock is fed by a reciprocating gripper within the machine spindle, the gripping portion of the gripper is formed of urethane rubber of sleeve like configuration and is located in the end of the gripper tube. The gripper device P is attached to an end of a feed tube 20 within the hollow spindle of the machine and is reciprocated to feed stock 5 to a stop 22. The feed tube is reciprocated by a collar 34 which engages a shoe assembly 36 which is displaced in a direction parallel to the spindle axis by way of a cam and lever mechanism, the operation of the gripper and the open and closing of the collet 48 in the machine spindle being arranged sequentially in relation to the feeding operation and meshing operation performed on the stock S. Alternative cross-sectional configurations of the urethane rubber gripping sleeve are described which assist in the retention of the urethane member in the gripping device and in the gripping of stock of different crosssections, e.g. circular, square, hexagonal, see Figs. 4, 6 and 8.
