Bar-stock feeding apparatus in a machine tool such as a lathe or screwing machine comprises a mechanically driven feed bar 6 having a collet chuck 7 for receiving and gripping an end region of the bar-stock and means actuated by the feed movement of the bar-stock for ensuring that the gripped end of the bar is inserted in the collet chuck to a predetermined extent thereby avoiding excessive end wastage of the bar during machining. In operation, the feed bar with the bar-stock is moved longitudinally towards the machining station 3 of the machine tool, the bar-stock striking a cam and lever 11 and 11a respectively, which lever pivots to actuate a switch 14 which in turn effects actuation of a stop member 9 against which bar-stock abuts. The stop member 9 is maintained in the path of the bar-stock for a predetermined time, controlled by a time relay 15. This time delay is sufficient to effect the complete insertion of the bar in the collet chuck due to the continued axial thrust of the feeding means. A magazine 5 is provided for storing additional bar-stock.
