[Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXX] To prevent movement of the extrusion die due to strain in the extrusion press bed consequent on the elongation of the strain rods during extrusion, the extrusion cylinder 11 only of the press is rigidly secured (by bolts 13, 15) to the bed 10, the hydraulic power cylinder 37, connected to the cylinder 11 by strain rods 40, being held down to the bed 10 but free to slide longitudinally thereon in guide-ways 47, 48 (see Fig. 4). The elongation of the rods 40 is thus accommodated entirely by movement of the power cylinder 37 and in the machine shown, which is fitted with a cross-head 18 for coating welding rods, this ensures correct centering of the rods in the die mouth and a uniform coating. The hydraulic connections 53, [see Group XXVIII], to the cylinder 37 are designed to alow slight relative movement between the cylinder and pipe lines. The cross-head 18 is secured to the extrusion cylinder by clamps 31 operated by a handle 33 turning screws 32. The welding rods 23 are fed from a hopper 27 by rollers 29, 28 rotated by a motor 30 and the coated rods 24 removed by a conveyer 26.
