Abstract

625,593. Winding thread &c. PORTER, D. April 1, 1947, No. 8789. [Class 120 (ii)] In a spool winding machine of the kind wherein the spools are mounted on vertical spindles to which motion is imparted by friction driving wheels which act upon driven discs on the spindles, each driven disc is made bodily movable heightwise and means are provided for lifting the said disc out of contact with the corresponding friction wheel, actuation of the said means for this purpose being automatically controlled by an element adapted to be displaced by the thread on a wound spool on the spindle. Thread &c. T from a bobbin 27 surrounded by a transparent casing 29 is led over a guide 31 and thence between guides 32, 33 to the hub of the winding spool 18 positioned horizontally at the top of a vertical spindle 13 driven by a friction wheel 19 through a disc 14 keyed at the lower end of the spindle. The friction wheels 19 of the machine are driven by an electric motor 7, which is adjustable along rods 4, through pulleys 23, 24. The portion 41 of a spring-biased " knock-off " lever, pivoted at 42, is contacted by the wound thread, when a predetermined diameter is reached, and turned to release a spring-loaded vertical catch 51, which, in falling presses on a weighted lever 62 to raise the driven disc 14 from its friction wheel 19 so to stop the drive. The "knock-off lever comprises two parts 43, 44 adjustably held together at 47 so that the diameter of winding at which " knock-off " occurs may be adjusted as required. The catchpin 51 is formed with a cam-faced top portion so that, in falling, the cam will move the lever 43, 44 away from the windings to facilitate doffing. In order that different sized spools may be wound with yarn &c., each spindle 13 may be bodily moved to vary its distance from the " knock-off " lever. The " knock-off " mechanism is reset by a handle 64 or by a dial. A handle 65 is included on the " knock-off " lever so that the operative may manually stop any spindle at will without stopping the others. The spool may be retained upon the spindle during winding by a knurled nut &c. If desired, a plurality of spools may be carried one above another on the same spindle and held together either by a knurled nut or a weight at the top.
