Abstract

455,396. Winding yarns. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London. Aug. 30, 1935, No. 24336. Convention date, Aug. 30, 1934. [Class 120 (ii)] In a machine for twisting and 5 winding yarns in which the yarn from a twisting package is wound on to a take-up package driven by a friction drum, a spring- urged lifting rod is disposed beneath the take-up package in the vicinity of the twisting package and is adapted both to lift the take-up package out of contact with the drum and to stop the rotation of the twisting package on failure of the yarn ; the lifting rod is held in a depressed inoperative position during normal operation of the machine by catch mechanism, a yarn-controlled detector member moving when the yarn fails and bringing a reciprocating member into contact with the catch mechanism to release the lifting rod. As shown the upper end of the lifting rod 50 engages a portion of the bracket 53 carrying the tube 22 on which the yarn is wound and is held in the depressed position against the action of the spring 51 by a catch 47 engaging a shoulder 115 on the rod, the catch being slidable in a housing 46 and carrying a trigger 48 which, with the catch, is forced forwards by a spring in the housing. A rod 43 carrying a lug 45 is reciprocated beneath the trigger 48 by connections from the shaft 31 carrying the friction driving drum 23 and has its free end supported by an extension of the detector member 44 which is pivoted on a pin 97 and is normally supported by the yarn 18. The supply package 61 is mounted on a twisting spindle 13 mounted in an arm 14 pivoted in a tension spring pivot 15 to a bracket 16 so that the wharl 17 forced against the driving belt 9 driven from a motor 1 and tensioned by a counterweight 8 on the shaft of a pinion 5 gearing with a rack on a sliding platform 3 carrying the motor ; the drum 23 and traverse mechanism are driven from the belt 9. When the yarn fails, the extension of the detector member 44 moves up and carries the lug 45 on the reciprocating rod 43 in front of the trigger 48 which is moved by the lug, against the action of its spring, to withdraw the catch 47 from the shoulder 115 of the rod 50; the spring 51 then lifts the rod to lift the package 55 from the drum 23 to stop the winding while a cam 58 on the rod engages the arm 14, withdraws the wharl 17 from the belt 9 and forces it against a fixed brake member 60 to stop the supply of yarn ; the parts are reset by a pedal 63 on the rod 50 after the detector has been placed behind the yarn. The bracket 53 carrying the yarn tube 22 is mounted on a rod 54 by split arms 57 and the frictional contact between the rod and bracket may be adjusted by screws 56 to prevent jumping of the tube 22 and yarn package 55. The traverse guide 21 is reciprocated at a varying rate to prevent the formation of ribbon winding by driving the traverse cam 87 through cone pulleys 68, 71 and a belt 70 which is traversed across the pulleys by a shifter 84 connected to a cam 78 driven from the pulley 68. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an expansible mounting for the yarn tube 22, the mounting comprising a split tube having internal conical shoulders engaged by conical thimbles journalled on collars on a shaft 100 fixed in the bracket 53 ; one if the collars engages a quick thread on the shaft 100 and is adjustable by a handle 109 to clamp the tube 22 on the mounting. The traverse guide may also be reciprocated at. a varying rate from the shaft 31 by a differential gear embodying elliptical wheels. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
